Before you pick a system

Do you really need a PIM?

Sometimes not. Magento 2 is enough as a product base when e-commerce is the only consumer of the data and one or a few people work on it. A dedicated PIM starts to pay off only once product data travels further than the store. We implement both, so we say it plainly.

Magento 2 is enough as a product base when

  • E-commerce is the only consumer of your product data. You do not publish it further, to other channels.
  • The process does not need to be split: you do not need a draft, approval, publish path.
  • One or a few people work on the data, and a mini-workflow on a separate, non-public store view is entirely enough.
  • The job is to feed e-commerce with data from several different sources. That can be wired straight into Magento, without standing up a PIM on the side.

A dedicated PIM, when

  • Product data feeds many channels – marketplaces, other markets, an ERP, printed materials – and e-commerce is only one of the consumers.
  • Part of the assortment never reaches the store at all and is maintained as a specification database.
  • The process has to be split: data cannot change online straight away, approval and versioning are required.
  • A team works on the content and cares about controlling completeness before publication, granular permissions and orderly day-to-day work.
